Food trucks continue to be a growing dining trend throughout the nation's capital. Here are two mobile eateries that are available for event catering.
1. Eat Wonky is a food truck specializing in Wonky Fries, a version of the Canadian snack poutine. Menu items include fresh-cut potatoes fried in peanut oil and topped with "squeaky cheese" (cheddar cheese curds) and gravy, and the Wonky Dog, an all-beef hot dog topped with Wonky Fries and gravy on a sub roll. Also available is a grilled cheese sandwich (melted squeaky cheese and spices served on a grilled sub roll) and whoopie pies from Treet Bakery. Groups can reserve the blue-and-orange truck for events with rates starting at $1,000 for two hours minimum and $500 for each additional hour. Additional costs for permits and travel may apply for events outside of Washington.
2. Inspired by paletas, a fruity frozen ice pop from Mexico, Pleasant Pops uses locally sourced dairy and fruit for its popsicles, which are made locally in Mount Pleasant. Flavors include carrot-apple-ginger ale, watermelon-black pepper, and sweet cream and corn. While the pops have been available at various farmers markets for more than a year, the company got a new truck, named Big Poppa, in October and has hit the streets Monday though Friday, serving a rotating selection of more than 60 seasonal flavors. Groups can reserve Big Poppa or one of two pushcarts for events; the service is available only in Washington. A minimum order of 50 pops is required. Pops are $2.50 each.
