Best of 2011: Las Vegas's 10 Most Notable New Event Venues

Alesandra Dubin
December 5, 2011

This year saw the openings of many significant event and meeting venues in Las Vegas, including restaurants from big-name chefs, private rooms, hotels, bars, nightclubs, lounges, event spaces, galleries, and more—even a museum. Here's a look at seven of the most notable venues to open in Las Vegas in 2011 (see slide show), plus previews of three more that have openings planned by the end of the year (see below).

8. Martin Lawrence Galleries at the Forum Shops at Caesars
The team behind the new Martin Lawrence Galleries at the Forum Shops at Caesars is billing it as possibly the biggest art gallery in the U.S., with more than 26,000 square feet of gallery, exhibition, and event space in all. About 8,500 square feet opened in late summer, but the venue will be available for meeting and event buyout when it is fully open in the coming weeks. There are soaring 80-foot ceilings, a 20-foot tall neon “Art” sign, huge guillotine walls that can be raised and lowered, an enormous projection wall, and a sound system.

9. 1Oak at the Mirage Hotel & Casino
With a buzzy New Year's Eve opening planned, The Light Group will open 1Oak at the Mirage Hotel & Casino, where it will replace Jet Nightclub. It will be a partnership with New York-based lifestyle and hospitality company Butter Group (owners of restaurants the Darby and Butter, and lounges and nightclubs the Darby Downstairs, 1Oak NYC, Butter NC, and 1Oak Brazil). International design firm Munge Leung will execute the interior design vision for 1Oak’s Las Vegas outpost, which was conceived collaboratively between the Light Group and the Butter Group. Artist Roy Nachum will incorporate original works of art into the look.

10. SBE's Hyde at the Bellagio
Another highly anticipated New Year's Eve opening is an outpost of SBE's Hyde at the Bellagio in the former Fontana Bar space, with a lounge-y feel by day and a club vibe at night. The indoor-outdoor space will have fountain frontage. Philippe Starck is working on the design, keeping in line with the look of the Bellagio and blending it with the Hyde brand. The capacity is about 730 people in 12,000 square feet.

Opened with a massive New Year's Eve bash in time to ring in 2011, the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has developed a reputation for being the hottest new hotel property. It's on the Strip between CityCenter and the Bellagio. In addition to 2,995 rooms, the Cosmopolitan has a nightclub and lounge, 150,000 square feet of convention and banquet facilities, Marquee nightclub and dayclub, 60,000 square feet of retail space, 100,000 square feet of casino space, three pool areas and a 50,000-square-foot spa, salon, and fitness center. It also has a diverse roster of top-end restaurants, including Comme Ça and Jaleo.

Lake Las Vegas’s shuttered Ritz-Carlton was reopened in February by New Jersey-based Dolce Hotels & Resorts as Ravella at Lake Las Vegas. The property has 349 guest rooms and suites, and offers 39,000 square feet of meeting and event space, including an 11,841-square-foot grand ballroom with 7,423 square feet of prefunction area, a 4,700-square-foot junior ballroom, 10 function rooms, and a lakeside, climate-controlled outdoor pavilion. In addition, Ravella offers a top-end, 30,000-square-foot spa and preferred tee times at the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course at the neighboring South Shore Country Club.

Central Michel Richard at Caesars Palace opened in September as the first round-the-clock restaurant helmed by a James Beard award-winning chef, and the venue is courting meeting groups to its flexible space. The 9,600-square-foot restaurant seats about 300 guests and has a patio terrace that can be booked for private parties. Central also has a wine room to the left of the main entrance and a red wine room deeper in the restaurant; both rooms have 13-foot ceilings. With advance notice of at least 14 days, Central is available for buyouts for lunch meetings between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m

4. Nevada State Museum
4. Nevada State Museum
The Nevada State Museum reopened at the end of October at the Springs Preserve. Its function space holds 200 and has a catering kitchen. An additional room holds another 100 people, resulting in room for 300 for private events. The Springs Preserve location means there is no smoking on the grounds. Private events can be scheduled for any day of the week, although the museum is only open Fridays through Sundays.

Gallery Nightclub opened in April at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and is available for full buyout with a capacity of 2,300. The main room has a sprawling dance floor, two bars, and an elevated DJ booth. There are connecting dance platforms behind the club’s many V.I.P. booths to encourage interaction throughout the room. Oversize frames adorn the walls, showcasing original photography that depicts voyeuristic imagery. Designed by Amy Kim of AK DesignNetwork (whose design credits include collaboration with Philippe Starck on the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills), the 20,000-square-foot space merges vintage Gothic design with modern touches.

The Chateau Nightclub & Gardens opened in March at Paris Las Vegas. The nightclub and outdoor Parisian gardens, with sweeping views of the Las Vegas Strip, cover two stories and offer three separate nightlife experiences. The giant space has about 15,000 square feet in the nightclub, 10,000 on the Chateau Terrace, and 20,000 in the Chateau Gardens. The entire space is available for buyout, and, with the rooftop space, the venue accommodates about 2,500 guests.
