5. The Roxy

The Tribeca Grand hotel has a new name—the Roxy—and has opened new venues including Jack's Stir Brew Coffee and the Django, an underground jazz club. Designed with a vintage Parisian look, the space has red leather banquettes, arched ceilings, and a stage for live music. It seats 150 or holds 200 for receptions. The hotel also is renovating its 201 guest rooms, a project slated to finish this spring.

Santa Monica-based venture capital firm Upfront Ventures hosted its annual Upfront Summit tech conference earlier this month in Los Angeles. Meant in part to underscore the power of the local tech community and the importance of the firm’s location and proximity to the creative and entertainment realms, the event had a distinctly Los Angeles feel. As part of that approach, the lunch included a farmer’s market-style experience, with food trucks, picnic tables, and drinks served on a rustic cart.

Red threads also appeared on the edges of a communal table designed by Perkins & Will and the Ruder Group. Like many of this year's tabletop settings, the design had a natural look. The table had no linens and was topped with succulents and white taper candles. Small sprigs of greenery were tied onto white napkins with twine, and a furry throw added texture to the seats.
