For the 2011 Offshore Technology Conference, 2020 Exhibits created a tech-driven booth for GE Oil & Gas that included touch-screen displays, video walls, a two-story meeting space, and a floating video ring.

Relate is a new conference series from software company Zendesk that is focused on exploring relationships and customer service. To tie to that theme, organizers offered a thank-you note station at the May event in San Francisco. The company’s in-house creative team designed witty cards and invited attendees to personalize them with a hand-written note expressing their appreciation to their colleagues. More than 300 cards were stamped and then mailed by Zendesk staff, and attendees took home an additional 1,000 cards and envelopes.

Each illustration depicted two opposite forces—such as sun and moon, sea and space, etc.—along with a poem or joke that further explored those relationships. Attendees could color the books using colored pencils provided on tables around the event, and they also received a coloring book to take home in the conference gift bag.

Kentucky Fried Chicken Comic-Con Promotion

Kentucky Fried Chicken brought three activations to Comic-Con that were centered on the brand's founder and mascot, Colonel Sanders. Through a partnership with Adult Swim, the brand brought seven life-size Wi-Fi-enabled Colonel Sanders statues positioned around various intersections of the Gaslamp Quarter, each decked out in cosplay attire. When conferencegoers located the statues and connected to the network, they reached a co-branded Kentucky Fried Chicken and Robot Chicken digital hub for custom content. Costumed staffers were on hand to promote the brand and its comic campaign.

'Mr. Robot' Virtual-Reality Experience

Fans of USA Network's award-winning Mr. Robot series got to experience a virtual-reality prequel written and directed by the show's creator, Sam Esmail. The 12-minute fully scripted piece, created with Chris Milk’s virtual-reality production company Here Be Dragons in partnership with Universal Cable Productions, provided viewers with one of the first extended narrative pieces of television content in the VR medium. Mr. Robot stars Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, and Grace Gummer checked out the experience at Petco Park on July 21.

Samsung Experience's 'Suicide Squad' Activation

Several Suicide Squad stars attended the film's Samsung Experience activation at the Hard Rock Hotel on July 23. DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures, the Visionary Group, White Walls Fabrication, PMK-BNC, and Brightline Interactive worked with Samsung on the activation. The experience included a virtual-reality fight with characters from the movie, and a recreation of the Suicide Squad Belle Reve penitentiary—the high-security prison that housed the film's characters. Fans could also “Join the Squad” by taking a personality quiz to create their own character, and generating a short video of themselves to share on social media.

Smartphone cameras drive the fun in Corporate Games Team Building's Paparazzi game. Organizers divide participants into groups of about eight people each and give them a list of photographs and a bag of costumes and props. Teams then have a set amount of time to travel around a venue or within a designated part of the city, to capture as many of the photos as possible. Examples include a photo of team members posing as celebrities dining alfresco or a photo of team members hosting a cooking show. Organizers score the photos as they come in and put them into a slide show which can be viewed by everyone at the end of the event.

With hundreds, or even thousands, of people in attendance at most conferences, it becomes an ideal opportunity to attempt to set a Guinness World Record title. The attempt creates buzz even if it fails. At the National Federation of the Blind’s 2015 conference in Orlando, 2,480 attendees participated in a successful Guinness World Record title attempt for the largest umbrella mosaic. The open umbrellas created the image of the organization’s logo and tagline, “Live the life you want.” The stunt was part of the association’s 75th anniversary celebration.

At C2 Montréal in May, attendees stepped inside the “Channel” experience, where they could grab one of the phone receivers and have a conversation with another guest in the room. Organizers say the activity was intended to explore what it takes “to truly hear and be heard in our modern, hyper-connected world.” After the conversation, participants moved into a debriefing space to discuss the connection between the experience and their work.
