Tableau Conference
Tableau Conference

Software company Tableau held its annual data- and analytics-focused conference at Hyatt Regency New Orleans in October. The event's catering played off the idea of the New Orleans' tradition of a Cajun shrimp boil, with elements that included nets and a boat filled with beer. The conference was catered by the hotel’s off-premise catering arm 1718 Catering & Events.

On July 28, some 1,200 guests headed out to the Watermill Center in the Hamptons for the art organization’s annual benefit, one of the season’s biggest draws for philanthropists. Inside the dinner tent a chandelier positioned over the dance floor was made up of plastic recycling bags and pink fabric streamers.

As a surprising and humorous way to decorate the cavernous Park Avenue Armory's drill hall, the Jewish Museum and David Stark used more than 5,000 T-shirts to form walls and a ceiling. The custom tees were painted with tongue-in-cheek takes on classic slogans, like 'Frankie Says Relax It's Purim' and 'Got Spiel?' 'We love the fact that the characters of Purim—Esther, Mordecai, Haman, and Ahasuerus—could somehow be re-contextualized as the Fab Four, and thinking of that iconic T-shirt in which the Beatles names were lain out in the Helvetica font, we immediately made the leap to lay out our Purim names in that same format. And then that led to the blur of other iconic T-shirt graphics mixed with references to Judaism and Purim—all with a big smirk,' said Stark.

With a limited budget, Bruce sourced decals from a number of places to install representations of Pop Art-style graphics on the walls and columns of the lobby. The process lengthened production as the team applied and centered decals individually.

For its 20th birthday, Old Navy held a “selfiebration” in Times Square in October 2014, complete with a “balloon billboard.” Covered with 1,000 custom balloons, the 15-foot billboard was created by Deeplocal, which referred to the creation as a “selfie machine.” The marketing agency’s software grabbed images from Twitter that had the “sefliebration” hashtag and rasterized the photos to display them on the billboard via inflated balloons.

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago's 'World of Chocolate' Event
At the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's "World of Chocolate" event at the Hilton Chicago on November 29, a silent auction let guests bid at different levels starting at $50. Once a bid level was selected, guests would choose a number on a punchboard that corresponded to that bidding level. Event staffers dressed as professional boxers would then punch a hole through that number and reveal a corresponding prize. Lots included a gift certificate for a wine tasting, UGG Australia velvet men's slippers, and an overnight stay at Park Hyatt Chicago. The punchboard raised more than $14,000.

Speaking of Lena Waithe, a room by the actress and screenwriter was one of the more talked-about experiences. Called Oh Say Can You See, the four-part video discussed life as a black person in America and being trapped between the country's founding promises and the history of discrimination. Displayed on four oversize screens, creating a fully immersive experience, the video traced decades of black protest, black heroes, black art, and black excellence. The video was set to Whitney Houston's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

To celebrate the public opening of the Broad in Los Angeles in September 2015, event producer Ben Bourgeois was inspired by the art museum’s unique design. Laser-cut paper foldouts as tabletop centerpieces represented the architecture of Grand Avenue and surrounding buildings downtown, including Disney Hall and the new Broad. LED lights illuminated the representations of the buildings so they appeared to glow from within.
