The Boston Wine Expo brought more than 8,000 guests to the Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center for demos with celebrity chefs Ming Tsai and Barbara Lynch, a Grand Tasting with more than 200 wineries, and more than 25 wine-education seminars. The convention has raised more than $1.3 million for charities; a primary beneficiary is the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. Next: February 15-16, 2014

This year Taste of the Nation Boston raised $95,000 to combat childhood hunger. Honorary chefs included Jody Adams, Gordon Hamersley, Joanne Chang, Andy Husbands, and Tony Maws, with celebrity guests Ming Tsai and Jamie Bissonnette. In honor of the Boston Marathon bombings, $10,000 was donated to Boston Medical Center. Next: April 29, 2014

The second annual Friends for Haiti event took place at Duxbury Beach, where organizers raised $85,000 from 500 guests for the Island Creek Oysters Foundation, supporting Caribbean Harvest, a tilapia-farming project in Haiti. Next: November 12, 2014

New England’s largest one-day farmers’ market, the Boston Local Food Festival took over the Rose Kennedy Greenway this year with a “Healthy Food for All” theme, produced by the local Sustainable Business Network.
