The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the look of its Oscar night Governors Ball at a preview at the Hollywood & Highland Center this Tuesday morning—and it's inspired by the 1930s Art Deco design style called Streamline Moderne. More specifically, Paul Williams, who designed ceiling treatments for Saks Fifth Avenue, and Dorothy Draper, whose curving designs influenced hotel decor, motivated the party's look and feel. The space will include a ceiling treatment made from fiber-optic chandeliers, a raised promenade stage, and a grand spiral staircase.
Cheryl Cecchetto and the Sequoia Productions team will once again produce the event; Cecchetto has been at it for 21 consecutive years. The production team will work with first-time ball chair Jeffrey Kurland, an academy governor representing the art directors branch. Kurland, an Oscar-nominated costume designer, has designed the attire that will be worn by the evening's performers and staff, including cocktail servers, waiters, and the orchestra.
Wolfgang Puck will again cater the event with his traditional array of Oscar statuette-shaped foods, including gold-dusted chocolate desserts from pastry chef Sherry Yard.
The ball will be held in the Hollywood & Highland Center's Grand Ballroom on March 7 after the awards at the Kodak Theatre.
