May 20, 2013: Qantas Offers Low-Tech Booking Perk, Rain Makes Cannes Parties Less Glamorous, Electric Daisy Returns to New York

1. QANTAS OFFERS LOW-TECH BOOKING PERK: Frequent fliers of Qantas are being offered a decidedly low-tech perk: paperback books. Fast Company: "A collaboration between Hachette and Droga5 is attempting to get Qantas's passengers to turn their tablets and e-readers off, and turn instead to paperbacks. Stories for Every Journey is a collection of bespoke books aimed at the airline's frequent flyers. Each of the 10 volumes has been written to allow travelers to devour it, front to back, within the flight time. … The monochrome covers have been beautifully designed by Paul Belford, and each book has a customized foreword and note from Qantas C.E.O. Alan Joyce." http://bit.ly/184J2Um

2. RAIN MAKES CANNES PARTIES LESS GLAMOROUS: Bad weather ruined, or at least toned down, several parties at the Cannes Film Festival this year, including one hot ticket for Lionsgate's blockbuster The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. New York's Vulture blog: "The Catching Fire party, whose cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars was mostly shouldered by sponsor CoverGirl and foreign film distributors, was meant to have a super secret special effect happening oceanside, one that required special effects crews to be flown in from the States —rumors were a barge with fireworks and a wall of water onto which images would be projected (really it was going to be a projection of water onto a screen)—that simply had to be scrapped. The Capitol seal was still raised high at the end of a pier that was supposed to have been filled with champagne-swilling revelers, but like Gatsby's green light, it was barely visible through the deluge, and seemed so very far away." http://vult.re/19Up3qp

3. ELECTRIC DAISY RETURNS TO NEW YORK: Insomniac Events' Electric Daisy Festival came to New York this weekend with a two-day concert in the parking lot of Citi Field ballpark. Five stages were arranged in a semicircle, and about 40,000 people attended. New York Times: "Now that dance-music festivals have become a summer fixture, everyone at Electric Daisy played an appointed role. The audience arrived dressed for Instagram impact, in skimpy, inventive, fluorescent-hued costumes: tutus, shaggy leggings, beaded bracelets, light-up pacifiers, and, for a large male contingent, T-shirts with aggressively raunchy slogans. The promoter framed the DJs on stages with giant LED displays; dotted the grounds with light-up electronic sculpture-gizmos and carnival rides; and had supersize marionettes wandering through the crowd and dancers popping up on various stages." http://nyti.ms/14loRjl
