Paramount Has Winners, Weinsteins Have Murdoch

With temperatures dipping into the 40s Monday evening, only the hardiest guests braved the outdoor tents and poolside gardens at the Golden Globe awards after-parties. That meant that the hottest parties at the Beverly Hilton really were the hottest parties, crammed with people trying to stay warm. One notable exception was the Paramount bash, which was fortunate enough to be able to stretch its legs in the former Robinsons-May department store next door. The cavernous space has morphed into a particularly comfortable event venue with plenty of room to move—and, even better, breathe.

Paramount had a lot to celebrate, with wins for Dreamgirls and Babel, and there was plenty for people-watchers to snack on. In addition to the expected appearances of stars like Beyoncé and Globe winner Jennifer Hudson were a couple of surprises: Mary Wilson, one of the original Supremes, and former studio president Gail Berman, who had been fired the previous week.

With fire marshals scrutinizing every event, long lines sprang up around the hotel, making party-hopping much more difficult than proximity would suggest. The Weinstein Company’s bash at Trader Vic’s was packed even though it didn’t have any of its own winners to fete. One of the brothers’ more prominent guests was Fox titan Rupert Murdoch, who’d ditched his own party. The Fox bash at the Hilton thinned out relatively early despite the studio’s claim to winners Meryl Streep, Sasha Baron Cohen, and Forest Whitaker. Of course, the Weinsteins had a little help from friends like DJ Pesce, who kept the crowd on its feet until the early morning.
