* INCOMING *
1. LEAVING LONDON: The Olympics closed in London Sunday night with a concert for a worldwide audience of 300 million that featured acts from the Spice Girls to Jessie J to Eric Idle. Billboard: "It was all delivered in a psychedelic mashup that had 80,000 fans at Olympic Stadium stomping, cheering and singing along. … There were also monochrome recreations of London landmarks covered in newsprint, from Big Ben's clocktower and Tower Bridge to the London Eye ferris wheel and the chubby highrise known as the Gherkin. It all spread out across an Olympic Stadium floor arranged to resemble the British flag." http://bit.ly/PdM4is
Reversing gains made during the Super Bowl, brands with Olympic plans failed in digital marketing. "Olympics advertisers—nearly across the board—have been coming up short in social media, according to research from A.T. Kearney. The firm analyzed 246 television spots placed by 140 brands, finding that only 10 percent of the commercials referenced branded properties on Facebook, Twitter and/or YouTube." http://bit.ly/P8yXih
The New York Times reviews the sponsor pavilions at Olympic Park. Panasonic wins praise as the best effort, while Coca-Cola was "underwhelming" and BP "straight-up corporate propaganda": http://nyti.ms/NVw92B
2. NOT HOG WILD: Was Harley-Davidson's marketing event to attendees of BlogHer conference in New York a success, or a bust? The outreach to the female bloggers, held at Whiskey Park bar, featured demonstrations of how to ride the motorcycle and speeches from comedian Margaret Cho and the company's Karen Davidson. The New York Times called the event a "backfire." Davidson "struggled to be heard over the bar chatter, an indication that the familiar motorcyclist tropes would not sway this crowd. It underscored the company’s inability to assess its target demographic and convey a relatable image of riding. … Literature aimed at women, including a pamphlet titled 'We Ride,' depicted bikes but few relevant specifications. Images and copy were heavy on landscapes of the American Southwest, bandanas and Navajo jewelry. This conception of Americana hardly seemed appropriate for iPad-toting twenty- and thirtysomething city-dwellers." http://nyti.ms/QkNkeK
3. CALIFORNIA CASH: Singer Gwen Stefani hosted a family-day themed fund-raiser for President Obama's re-election campaign attended by First Lady Michelle Obama. The Beverly Hills event for 400 guests. The Hollywood Reporter: "The event has been billed as a "Sunday of Fun," and on one side of the house is a hardcourt tennis court, which has been decorated for the event with bridge of red, white and blue balloons arranged in the form of an American flag. Various stations are set up on the tennis court, where children can get fake tattoos and balloon animals. Staff are dressed in black-and-white striped shirts; one wears a hat shaped like a hot dog, another a straw hat surrounded by fake flowers." http://bit.ly/REIbSR
4. R.N.C.'S BEACH BASH: An exclusive tropical-beach-themed party planned during the Republican National Convention is drawing interest because of its secret guest list as well as its organizer, Washington-based Joyce Gates of Warehouse Productions and former chief of staff to Ohio congressman and current U.S. Speaker of the House John Boehner. Tampa Bay Times: "A lobby will feature a pirate statue, a treasure map and lots of bamboo. Sand will be imported to cover the ground of one lounge, which will have hammocks, other hanging chairs and a coconut tree. There will be a jazz club, a massive dance floor next to a water feature and a turntable stage surrounded by the main bar. The improvements are temporary, however, and will vanish when the partying is over." http://bit.ly/O1vcWo
5. BLUE BUBBLY: Dom Pérignon tapped David Lynch to design limited-edition labels for the champagne. AdWeek: "They have a ghostly luminescence to them—classy but with the undercurrent of unease for which the director is famous." http://bit.ly/QMWHbi
