This Week: Music, Fashion, and Politics

So are you as busy as we are? The September blitz of events is in full effect—so here's a rundown: Today the CMJ Music Marathon kicks off, with bands taking to stages at venues all over town; panels and exhibits are headquartered at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The marathon continues through Saturday. Earlier today, event designer Preston Bailey launched his Signature WeddingMoons destination weddings program for Sandals Resorts with a luncheon at the Four Seasons restaurant hosted by Joan Rivers.

A screening of Proof will take over the new West Village Richard Meier-designed residential complex tonight; the event will benefit the Film Foundation. Also tonight, Cartier launches its Orchid jewelry collection with a benefit for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund at Gotham Hall, The Daily hosts its You're So Daily Fashion Week party at Home, and H&M, David LaChapelle, and Interview magazine launch H&M Denim at Splashlight Studios.

The first-ever Harlem International Film Festival opens tonight with a gala at Columbia University’s Low Memorial Library. Screenings take place through Sunday at the Magic Johnson Loews Theater, Columbia’s Dodge Hall, and the plaza at the Adam Clayton Powell building. Downtown, guests get buzzed tonight with the grand opening of Galleria Illy, the Italian espresso giant’s promotional venue in SoHo; the center will be open through December 15.

On Thursday, world leaders gather for the first Clinton Global Initiative, which convenes at the Sheraton New York. An opening day party will be held at the Museum of Modern Art. The meeting continues through Saturday. The Times Square Alliance hosts Design Times Square, a design showcase at the W New York Times Square. Also Thursday, The Wall Street Journal celebrates its new weekend edition with a party at Tribute. And in Little Italy, the Feast of San Gennaro begins, with festivities through September 25th. At the Javits Center, the Luxury Travel Expo arrives on Thursday and continues through Saturday.

Friday, the a final day of activity at the tents in Bryant Park and the flurry of events surrounding Fashion Week come to an end with Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. runway show at Roseland. Also on Friday, the New York Bridal March begins with a party at the Council on Foreign Relations’ Harold Pratt House. Event designers, fashion designers, and culinary experts host seminars during the weekend at the Pratt House and locations including Barneys New York.

Saturday, arts nonprofit Minetta Brook and the Whitney Museum of American Art launch late artist Robert Smithson’s “Floating Island” project—a landscaped barge that will circle the island of Manhattan through September 25; an opening event takes place at Pier 46 of Hudson River Park. That evening Jazz at Lincoln Center presents its Higher Ground hurricane relief concert. Also Saturday, the Hard Rock Cafe shows off its new location with an opening party. Sunday in Times Square, a bevy of Broadway show numbers are performed at the annual Broadway on Broadway outdoor concert. On the West Coast, the Emmy awards take over L.A., with its ceremony at Shrine Auditorium Sunday.

Back in New York on Monday, indie film types gather for the Independent Feature Project’s Market, with conferences at the Puck Building and screenings at venues including the Angelika Film Center. The National Television Academy doles out its news and documentary Emmy awards at the Marriott Marquis Monday night. And socialites swarm for the opening night of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2005-2006 season Monday evening; the gala performance and dinner is at the Metropolitan Opera House. Across town at the Museum of the City of New York, the Director’s Council Summer Party benefit brings out a fashionable young crowd. Also on Monday, the Dance Music Hall of Fame inductions are held at Manhattan Center Studios.

Tuesday is the New York Botanical Garden’s Rose Garden benefit. In the East Village, the Night of Olana benefit raises funds for the Hudson Valley property (the mansion and grounds of Olana) with a party at a private residence and artist’s studio space. And it just keeps going.
