AVP Launches Season With Poolside Fashion Show

While surf and sand are commonplace at AVP pro beach volleyball games, they were nowhere in sight at the lifestyle sports entertainment company’s media day last Thursday. “We wanted a big, open, and sunny space that wasn’t the beach but still felt summery,” said AVP director of human resources Mary Vinette. The solution? Go from seaside to poolside, at the Beverly Hilton’s Circa 55 poolside lounge.

Vinette worked with the hotel’s director of marketing, Dee Doak, to coordinate the event, which celebrated the launch of the 2007 AVP Crocs Tour—now featuring nine additional cities, including a first-time stop in Long Beach—and introduced the media to the tour’s new teams and top players, who modeled this season’s AVP line of on-court apparel.

Athletes walked alongside cabanas, which functioned as greenrooms, before stepping onto a platform stage, where AVP announcer Chris McGee introduced and briefly interviewed them. Professional models then took to the stage in a line of swimsuits and trunks designed by Speedo for the AVP. A volleyball net bordered a step-and-repeat wall to the right of the stage. Original plans called for a walkway made of half a ton of sand, but the hotel decided to abandon the idea over concerns that the sand might spill off the walkway and cause guests to slip. A sand-colored carpet served as a last-minute replacement.
