At a cocktail reception hosted by Los Angeles dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu and actress Maria Bello, there were no performances by Grammy winners, celebrity DJs, or any of the usual accoutrements of metropolitan Hollywood events these days. The heavily female crowd at Wu’s Brentwood home had their eyebrows plucked, their makeup freshened, and their hair pouffed in the name of charity, which was all the entertainment anyone needed. Waiters circulated with trays of ahi tuna, olive salad in cherry tomatoes, and brownies from Whitehouse Dish, while guests sipped Edna Valley chardonnay and studied beauty tips from Wu, printed on cards scattered around the room (“If your brows lack substance, take Biotin supplements…”). Silver Birches produced the benefit for Half the Sky, which cares for orphans in Chinese welfare institutions. Katy Sweet handled PR and Allure magazine cosponsored.
