As the two-year, $500 million expansion of Horseshoe Casino in nearby Hammond, Indiana, nears completion (check out the venue's preview party from last week here), one of three boarding ramps collapsed into Lake Michigan early Tuesday. As reported by The Chicago Tribune, seven iron workers, who were on a barge under the ramp at the time of the collapse, jumped into the lake to avoid injury. The ramp came loose from the barge and swung into the water while other workers at the site dove in to help their colleagues. Only one worker, who sustained cuts and bruises from the fall, was taken to the hospital and released Tuesday afternoon.
The renovations include the removal of an existing riverboat casino, which will be replaced by a vessel more than three times in size. The collapsed ramp, which was to serve as the main pedestrian entrance to the riverboat from the Horseshoe's hotel pavilion, is being assessed for damage. The revamped Horseshoe Casino, which is operated by Harrah's Entertainment, is still scheduled to open on its planned date of August 8, according to the casino's general manager.
