* INCOMING *
1. 9/11 MEMORIAL: Families gathered yesterday for the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks at the site's new memorial. The site's two reflecting pools with cascading waterfulls are lined with the names of the 2,977 victims engraved in metal slabs. White oak trees are also scattered around the eight-acre plot of land.
The New York Times: "Most of the families pronounced the memorial beautiful, and they were moved, they said, just to have the names of their loved ones permanently displayed…The pools were black and a little intimidating, and the cascading water was as deafening as Niagara Falls."

The New York Post: "Many mourners were inspired to trace the names of their loved ones as poignant keepsakes. So many people started making rubbings that memorial staffers rushed out and bought boxes and boxes of crayons, which they distributed to visitors with paper."

Mayor Bloomberg says the memorial was rushed: “I always thought we did it a little bit wrong…Hopefully, this memorial will still...give a message 100 years from now.” The Post:

Post critic Steve Cuozzo: "As New Yorkers know from renderings, the centerpiece of [architect Michael] Arad’s scheme—on nearly half of what was once called Ground Zero—is the pair of square, reflecting pool waterfalls set within the Twin Towers’ footprints. Their scale is eye-popping: two cataracts, on each side as long as a city block. But while they’re bound to be insanely popular with tourists, they suggest less the heartwrenching dispatch of souls to oblivion than massive industrial runoff."

The memorial opens to the public today. Visiting it requires timed tickets available through an online reservation system:

4. SALES FROM F.N.O. QUESTIONABLE: Although Fashion's Night Out drew large crowds this past Thursday and turned into more of a party than a shopping event, retailers are waiting to see if those in attendance not only had fun, but purchased items while doing so. WWD (subscribers only):

5. PAPER TOWELS CAUSE CHAOS: Backed up restrooms didn't stop organizers of the Western Gun and Collectibles Show from letting the show go on at the Ruidoso Convention Center in New Mexico on Saturday. After finding that attendees from a previous show put paper towels rather than toilet paper into the system, the Special Events Resource Group didn't stop its show; instead, they brought in portable restrooms and a plumber.
