1. TRADE SHOW TIPS: With the Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas, NBC Chicago gives a primer on how small businesses can get the most out of presenting at a trade show. One booth design tip: "a black background booth with large video screens tends to catch attention because it will really stand out from all the many, many colors out there on the floor." http://bit.ly/X3nMbF

Mashable looks at other trends from C.E.S., including the value for small brands. "While the bigger tech players have realized they can more effectively control the narrative of their product launches when they stage their own events, for smaller, newer companies, C.E.S. is invaluable. It lets them connect with the press and potential partners all in one place while simultaneously giving them credibility (exhibiting is an expensive proposition, and requires commitment)." http://on.mash.to/UKI6yR

2. BASKETBALL V.I.P.S: The New York Post surveys the scene inside the Vault suites at the new Barclays Center, where the yearly fee costs $550,000. "Waitresses clad in black squeeze through the revelers, offering up sliders and shrimp cocktail to taste with gratis bubbly. (Liquor costs extra.) The DJ’s music grows louder, and suddenly, the Knicks self-appointed cheerleader, Spike Lee, parts the crowd like Moses in a Knicks warm-up shirt. He says a quick hello to the Jets’ injured cornerback, Darrelle Revis, before disappearing into a private suite." http://bit.ly/W8ZNoD

3. G.S.A. SEEKS ADVICE: The General Services Administration is looking for travel and event leaders to help it review its travel program, including figuring out how to set its per diem. It's accepting nominations for committee members, particularly people who are travel managers, hoteliers, airline managers, association leaders, and state and local government representatives. "We're looking for industry experts to address trends and provide advice to the government on the per diem rate," a G.S.A. spokesperson told Business Travel News. http://bit.ly/XiWCkV

4. PLANNING FESTIVALS: Ever wonder what it's like to plan a festival? Robert Jimenez is Washington's "go-to organizer" for the city's many ethnic holiday celebrations and festivals. Washington Post: "Jimenez, who is compact with buzz-cut black hair, seems to be perpetually opening his laptop or rummaging in his binder for fairground rules, food permits, festival insurance policies, lists of fire-department contacts, and maps of parks. He keeps battered folders filled with the endless paperwork that anyone who plans to pull off an event for 10,000 people must file." http://wapo.st/10YsrjR
