February 2, 2016: Hockey Scores With Revamped All-Star Game, Designers Move Shows to Accommodate Kanye Spectacle, SFX Entertainment Declares Bankruptcy

1. HOCKEY SCORES WITH REVAMPED ALL-STAR GAME: After a disappointing all-star game last year, the N.H.L. revamped its format for this weekend’s exhibition in Nashville with several rounds of 3-on-3 mini tournaments leading up to a championship. The experiment was a success. Yahoo Sports: “Twenty-minute period. Musical act. Twenty-minute period, same players. Musical act. Twenty-minute period, same players, final buzzer, MVP gets a car, we all go home. That’s been the NHL All-Star Game for at least the last 25 years. So this new format breathed new life into it. Three different games provided three different experiences. The musical acts were spread out. The whole thing felt looser and more relaxed … The bones of thing are stronger than they have been for years. And so were the ratings.” http://yhoo.it/1PwocEI

2. DESIGNERS MOVE SHOWS TO ACCOMMODATE KANYE SPECTACLE: Two fashion designers have moved their New York Fashion Week shows after suddenly finding themselves competing with Kanye West’s just-announced fashion and music spectacle at Madison Square Garden on February 11. It’s the second year in a row West has inserted himself into the calendar. Fashionista: “While the element of surprise might add to the buzz and excitement surrounding West's show, it puts other designers in a tough spot. Even an established, respected brand can't expect to compete.” http://bit.ly/1nIpNgI

3. SFX ENTERTAINMENT DECLARES BANKRUPTCY: After months of speculation about its financial future, SFX Entertainment declared bankruptcy on Monday. The New York Times: “According to an announcement, the company’s many festivals around the world, including Electric Zoo, Tomorrowland, Mysteryland and Stereosonic, will go on as planned, and other businesses, like its digital music store Beatport, will remain operational. … SFX’s reorganization raises questions about the future of the company, including whether pieces of it will be bought by rivals in the concert and live-entertainment businesses.” http://nyti.ms/1SopHrs
