1. L.A. PRIDE PARADE TO BE REPLACED WITH ANTI-TRUMP MARCH: The annual Los Angeles Pride parade will take the form of an anti-Trump protest this year. Vogue: "Last week, leaders of Christopher Street West, the organization that produces the L.A. Pride festival, announced they’d be joining in the nationwide Resist March on June 11, changing the tone of the yearly Pride march to better suit the times. According to L.A. Pride’s website, the 2017 Pride events will be explicitly focused on uniting various marginalized groups to fight current political battles, as opposed to reflecting on past progress for LGBTQ+ rights. 'Given the current political climate where divisiveness and discrimination continue to be part of mainstream dialogue, CSW is determined to make the L.A. Pride brand a unifying force for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies across all of Los Angeles,' the organizers stated. 'To accomplish this goal, the organization is introducing several community-focused initiatives to continue L.A. Pride’s long-standing history as a voice of and for the entire LGBTQ+ community.' On paper, the protest does not seem so different from the traditional parade: Participants will still march to West Hollywood, where the Pride festival typically takes place, occupying a three-mile stretch that also makes its way through Los Angeles proper. But the public demonstration is expected to be unusually forward facing and diverse, given this year’s emphasis on inclusion and intersectionality. Organizers expect anywhere from a quarter million and a half million attendees, a crowd close to the massive L.A. Women’s March in January, which drew an estimated 750,000 participants." http://bit.ly/2mD0Dk0
2. MTV MOVIE AWARDS EXPAND TO HONOR TV: MTV has announced that it will rebrand its MTV Movie Awards as the MTV Movie & TV Awards, to honor television for the first time in 25 years at the upcoming show on May 7. CNN: "'We're living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you're watching it in a theater or on TV,' Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, said in a statement. 'The new 'MTV Movie and TV Awards' will celebrate even more of the brightest, bravest, funniest and most shared films and TV shows resonating across youth culture.' The award show's host, nominees, performers and presenters will be unveiled at a later date, MTV said. MTV will also for the first time host a Movie and Television Festival at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles the day of the awards, the network said. The MTV Movie Awards have been a staple event for the network since 1992. While the show is known less for its honors—categories include Best Kiss and Best Fight—its history for delivering off-the-wall moments is rivaled only by the MTV VMAs." http://cnn.it/2ngWxBr
3. MORE BANDS CANCEL SXSW SHOWS AFTER BEING DENIED U.S. ENTRY: Three more bands have canceled their South by Southwest appearances after members were denied entry into the U.S. NPR: "The label Brownswood Recordings, founded by DJ, producer and broadcaster Gilles Peterson, announced that the drummer Yussef Dayes—who performs in two bands, the London-based duo Yussef Kamaal, which is signed to Brownswood, and United Vibrations alongside his brothers Ahmed and Kareem—had his 'visa revoked at the 11th hour.' The label added that Yussef Kamaal believes this decision "to be discrimination based on religion and race.' According to a statement from Brownswood, all three Dayes brothers, originally scheduled to travel to the U.S. tomorrow, have had their status under the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) revoked. Overnight, the post-hardcore band Massive Scar Era, which is based dually in Vancouver, Canada and Cairo, Egypt, posted a video on Facebook saying that its members were denied entry into the United States in advance of a planned showcase performance at SXSW. The group was carrying a letter from SXSW asserting that they could travel to the U.S. under the so-called "showcase exception" with tourist visas. (The band Soviet Soviet, which was denied entry to the U.S. last week and returned to their native Italy, had also attempted to employ a letter from SXSW in a similar fashion.) According to Massive Scar Era's Facebook page, the group had at least four American tour dates planned for the next two weeks, including a stop in Austin during SXSW; Denver; Provo, Utah; and Seattle. If that information is accurate, it is entirely possible that the group was attempting to travel to the U.S. on incorrect visas." http://n.pr/2mnusmN
