To celebrate a $1 billion investment in its properties—not to mention a new line of swimwear with designer Rosa Cha—Club Med hosted parties in New York and Deauville, France, on the same night. Stateside, Club Med vice president of marketing Mark Wiser worked with Jes Gordon to transform Boylan Studios into a multiethnic resort, with sections inspired by the clubs in Martinique, Malaysia, Morocco, and Brazil.
Gordon used wicker furniture, colorful ottomans, and pillow-dotted hammocks to create the beach-evocative seating areas, accented with lush palms and tropical flowers. Over the bars stocked with Moët & Chandon, Belvedere, and 10 Cane, hanging fabrics billowed as a mild Hudson River wind blew in through the studio’s large windows.
In a nod to the Brazilian resort, that country’s petite singer Bebel Gilberto (daughter of “Girl from Ipanema” composer João Gilberto) performed a transcendental five-song set with her band in front of a photographic backdrop depicting an ocean sunset. The event's PR firm, the Susan Magrino Agency, wouldn’t confirm the details of Gilberto’s contract, but we have on good authority that her compensation included a luxurious holiday—and we’re jealous. At least the gift bags contained a pair of flip-flops with the Club Med logo to get guests in the mood.
