Catch a Flick
For those coming from out of town who want at least one celebrity sighting before they head
back to school, some of the outdoor fi lm screenings on the lawn at the W Hotel will feature the movie’s director or actors as guest speakers. Preorder one of executive chef Jack Yoss’s gourmet picnic baskets, which include cheese, sandwiches, wine, and a picnic blanket.
Laugh Out Loud Outside
For a garden party, tap into the Laugh Factory’s newly remodeled green space, hidden from view on an adjacent property. The area can accommodate catering requests ranging from caviar hors d’oeuvres to barbecue spreads and is available for a minimum of 50 guests.
Get With the Band
In addition to its traditional poolside DJ, the summer music series at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel this year will present a live band every month. Treat associates to the feel of an island getaway with the hotel’s Jamaican-themed series kickoff in June, which will feature reggae band Urban Dread, and a steel drum band every Friday night. The hotel’s executive chef, Gregg Wangard, will prepare Caribbean-inspired fare.
Hit an Upscale Barbecue
For a traditional summer pastime in a not-so-traditional setting, head to Whist at the Viceroy Santa Monica for its grilling nights. Throughout the summer, Whist executive chef Warren Schwartz will relocate from kitchen to patio, where he’ll fi re up a grill between the pool and cabanas and prepare everything from bratwursts to bacon-wrapped scallops with grapefruit aioli while offering guests grilling tips. Private grilling lessons are available, too.
