'Fault in Our Stars' Soundtrack Concert Builds Buzz for Film

Weeks prior to its release, the teen-centric film drew attention with a soundtrack concert instead of a more traditional screening event.

The Fault in Our Stars, a 20th Century Fox film based on the young adult novel, hits the big screen June 6. To promote the movie prior to its release, the film studio teamed up with Atlantic Records and YouTube to host an event that put a musical spin on a more traditional screening.

On May 14, fans gathered at YouTube's space in Playa Vista, California, for a so-called "soundtrack concert," which  was live-streamed on YouTube. Throughout the promotion, which was about an hour long, musical acts including Charlie XCX, Grouplove, and Ed Sheeran offered live renditions of songs that appear on the soundtrack.

Next to the concert stage was a small stage set up for interviews. The movie's stars, the evening's musical acts, and The Fault in Our Stars author John Green all answered questions posed by YouTube personality Tyler Oakley. Those following the live stream at home could also tweet in questions using the hashtag #TFIOSmusic.

Though it wasn't a traditional screening, the event did offer short, exclusive clips from the upcoming film. And on June 5, there will be a massive event called "Night Before the Stars," which includes sneak-peek screenings at more than 500 theaters nationwide. There will also be a massive simulcast of a live Q&A session with the film's actors, writer, and director immediately after the screening.

The stage set for the concert was decked with Astroturf, a white picket fence, and a swing set. The setup recalled a playground that's featured in the film.

“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
