MTV: No, Really, It's Gonna Be Fun!

Let’s be honest: Some employees have mixed feelings about the annual company holiday bash. But nobody likes to throw (and, more importantly, spend the money on) a party and not have anyone show up. Enter the corporate holiday party invite, aimed at creating a little stir of seasonal spirit in employees’ hearts—or at least motivating them to stop by for a drink and a canapé. This year at MTV Networks, an email from C.E.O. Judy McGrath encourages employees to come “get down.” (A hard-copy invite will underscore the message.)

It’s festive enough, and there’s a Red Bull reference thrown in for a we’re-down-with-the-young-folks air. But as McGrath alludes to, it’s been a year of change at the company, most notably the abrupt late-summer dismissal of Viacom C.E.O. Tom Freston. (In part, some say, to a sagging stock price.) So the question is, are MTVNers in the mood to party? (Perhaps they should get while the getting is good—layoffs at the company last year went down the week after the holiday blowout.) Here’s the email:

'Tis the season to get together, and get down at this year's MTV Networks Holiday Party.

We've seen transition and triumph in '06...and in every way, you have stepped up and delivered sensational work on every level, in every business, and yes, across every platform. And that calls for a Red Bull-infused, DJ dance celebration to blow off some steam. It's not just a party, it's our party.

So please come together December 7 at Hammerstein Ballroom, beginning at 7 PM. Invitations are coming in the mail, and check out [the company Intranet site] Rufus for the full details.

Peace on Earth (and keep it green),

-Judy
