The Drake Hotel sent out invitations to its one-year anniversary celebration in the form of love letters to event industry members and partygoers: the Drake boasted about its love affair with them, as well as with the city of Toronto, and gushed over how much the hotel has gotten out of the relationship thus far.
Like the invites, the event was artful and inspiring from the moment you walked through the door of the hotel. Eclectic DJs including Triple X, Abacus, and DJ Caroline spun high-energy beats as guests flooded in. The Drake's kitchen catered an eclectic menu of mini burgers, mini grilled cheese sandwiches with handmade fries, individual poutine servings, and martinis.
Like the letter-writing hotel, the rooms took on a life of their own. Each was a tribute to a classic moment in hotel history. Attendees were encouraged to tour the rooms, which contained live performance artists from Turbo Bonz Dance, posing as rocker couple Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen tearing apart their hotel room in classic punk rock fashion; John Lennon and Yoko Ono cuddling and singing on a bed; and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with companion Leon Trotsky amid lush florals and Kahlo's work.
Later in the evening, the Drake launched Drake TV, an in-hotel station for guests with art, music, and cultural programming.
