D.C.-Area Planners Enjoy V.I.P. Site Visit at FedExField

Anne Kiefer
October 17, 2012

It’s not easy to host an affair that will impress a room full of event planners, but that was the mission accomplished at the recent V.I.P. planner site visit at FedExField. For this event, hosted by BizBash and Redskins Special Events, FedExField rolled out the burgundy, gold, and white carpet to the more than two dozen planners with an oversize welcome on the HD video boards and a visit from former player Gary Clark.

Melissa Jones, event director at MLJ Event Management, was impressed by the space. She enjoyed a view of the field while noshing on a few items from the impressive spread served by a courteous and professional staff.

“It’s simple but still elegant,” said Jones of the Owner’s Club West space while sitting in one of the private suites that are included with the rental. “I love that it’s intimate, and that it is conducive to having a private function.”

The reasonable rental rates do not include food, but Heather McKenzie, special events manager, said that catering options are available to suit most budgets. There are no minimums or cost per head.

“You give catering your budget and they will develop a menu to suit that budget,” said McKenzie.

Fabulous food and beautiful spaces aren’t the only perks planners will find here. Tours led by the charismatic Redskins employee Lorenzo Thomas were offered to the guests of the BizBash event. Thomas, who is the manager of employee check in and check out, ushered the group to some of the venue's exclusive spots.

He teased the New York Giants fans that happened to be in the crowd by calling out, “Security! We’ve got them right here!” as he led the group through the players' locker room and down the same path that Redskins players take to the field.

The same behind-the-scenes access tour is included with space rental at FedExField. Other add-ons, such as cheerleader and alumni player appearances and, in some cases, field access, are also available.

Planners who attended the event took to social media to share their thoughts about the event at FedExField. Here are a few examples:

Rentals of Owner’s Club East, which can accommodate 450 for cocktails or about 160 for seated events, or Owner’s Club West, which can handle 175 for cocktails or 60 for a seated dinner, come with access to the private suites located off each space. The suites boast a delightful field view and also allow for smaller groups to gather during the event. The Joe Gibb's Club Level is ideal for larger gatherings and can seat 1,000 or serve up to 3,000 for cocktails. Other spaces, such as the Audi Club & Patio, Montecristo Lounge, and the outdoor Bud Light Pavilion, are also available. (301.276.6037, events.redskins.com)

Part of the V.I.P. tour was a visit to the Washington Redskin's player and coach locker rooms. Planners were able to pose for photo ops with the lockers of their favorite players and sit at the coach's desk.

'Tap into travel,' Borunda advises of hosting inside an airplane hangar. 'Hosting an event at a hangar opens doors to many fun themes.
