About 300 special event planners from around the world traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. last week for the International Special Event Societies' (ISES) three-day Center for Professional Development conference. Members of the group's 30 chapters (in locations including Morocco, Australia, Sri Lanka, London and Paris) got together to share ideas--and, naturally, enjoy a few parties of their own. ISES international president Lena Malouf of Sydney conducted the annual meeting, which honored Central Florida as chapter of the year, and Steve Kemble of Dallas' Steve Kemble Event Design as outstanding volunteer.
Other highlights: One of the associated special events featured a testosterone-filled road race (The winner: Mark Sonder of Mark Sonder Music). And the International Special Event Education Foundation (which supports scholarship and research for event professionals) held its Legacy Lunch and presented a study conducted by the George Washington University Event Management School, which included stats about salaries and work activities of 550 ISES members.
The annual Esprit awards (held at the historic Indiana Rooftop Ballroom and produced by Tim Lundy of Rosewood Market in Highlands, NC and Distinctive Design Events in Atlanta, Ga) was a stunning finale to the conference, and included an energetic performance by the Three Waiters. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Meeting House Companies' Deborah Borsum of Elmhurst, Il.
