To promote the upcoming fourth season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, the network kicked off a seven-city dance contest on Monday, aimed at driving both viewership and excitement for the show’s March 19 premiere. Back again were dancers clad in gold lamé star-shaped costumes (last season they garnered media attention by dancing across the Brooklyn Bridge and cavorting atop double-decker buses), who stood outside Madison Square Garden during rush hour, encouraging passersby to join the contest and get some free lessons. Professional dancers, a live band, and a panel of local celebrity judges were corralled into a roped-off section in MSG’s entryway from 4:30 to 7:30 PM, and the winning contestant scored a trip for two to Los Angeles for the show’s live premiere. The Rangers game at the Garden helped to garner foot traffic, and several hundred intrigued workers on their way home stopped by.
