August 8, 2013: MTV Forces Daft Punk to Cancel 'Colbert,' Google Glass Meets Fashion Week, How to Pay for an Oscar Campaign

1. MTV FORCES DAFT PUNK TO CANCEL 'COLBERT': Reflecting the cut-throat world of music bookings, Daft Punk canceled a performance on the Colbert Report Tuesday because it could endanger the band's slot in the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. The "Get Lucky" singers are slated to make a "surprise appearance" at the V.M.A.s, but they had also committed to Colbert. In the end, MTV won. The New York Times: "For Daft Punk, or any other act, a successful appearance on the Video Music Awards can be valuable promotion. The 2011 awards—featuring Kanye West, Jay Z, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga dressed as her male alter ego, Joe Calderone—drew a record 12.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen." http://nyti.ms/1cxe4sx

2. GOOGLE GLASS MEETS FASHION WEEK: Marie Claire's Nina Garcia will wear Google Glass to New York Fashion Week next month. Women's Wear Daily: "As the first editor to cover N.Y.F.W. in this vein, Garcia’s photos, videos and other Lincoln Center-ized insights will be beamed live across several of Garcia’s and Marie Claire’s social media channels, including Vine, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and the magazine’s Web site. Hearst is flagging the initiative as 'Be Nina.'" http://bit.ly/13POjv5

3. HOW TO PAY FOR AN OSCAR CAMPAIGN: Getting a documentary into the Oscar race is expensive, so one director has started a $50,000 Kickstarter fund-raising campaign to rent screening venues and market the film. Entertainment Weekly: "The money … will be used to book the theaters, pay for advertising, hire a publicist, do a technical finish to the sound and picture, pay for final music, and stock footage licensing,” said director Steven Charles Jaffe of his film Gahan Wilson: Born Dead, Still Weird. http://bit.ly/132Gdob
