New York-based Thompson Hotels is preparing to open its first international property, Thompson Toronto, on Wellington Street West in May. The 16-storey luxury hotel—a partnership between Time Equities Inc. and the Toronto-based companies Freed Developments and Global Edge Investments—will include 102 guest rooms and 30,000 square feet of dining and event space.

The hotel's signature restaurant will be an outpost of New York chef Scott Conant's Scarpetta and will seat 150 inside and 50 on a patio. The hotel will also house a 24-hour diner, a 150-seat sushi restaurant called Wabora, and a lobby bar featuring a hand-painted, three dimensional mural of Toronto's skyline—measuring 125 by 12 feet—by Spanish artist Javier Mariscal.

The private 16th floor will include a rooftop pool and an indoor lounge with a fireplace and bar. Additional amenities include a 40-seat screening room, a conference room that can accommodate groups of up to 30, an event space for up to 350 people, a fitness facility, and a yoga studio. A third floor terrace will offer 4,000 square feet of space.

"The success of the Thompson Hotel brand in the United States proves we have a concept that appeals to a chic, urban clientele," Jason Pomeranc, co-owner of Thompson Hotels, said in a statement. “Toronto shares many of the same attributes as our most successful markets." Thompson Hotels has nine locations in the United States, including 60 Thompson in New York and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.
