Images of Birds, Feathers Fill Redesigned Ultra

Susan O'Neill
February 27, 2009

Restaurateur and Ink C.E.O. Charles Khabouth—along with his partner Brenda Lowes—reopened Ultra earlier this month following a six-week renovation. The space, which closed New Year's Day, now features a more relaxed look thanks to a redesign by Munge Leung. A 25-foot solid-oak communal table is a focal point, while whimsical touches like the white feather backdrop behind the bar and the feather motif inside the oversize light fixtures in the lounge add a sense of playfulness to the space.

Khabouth, who called on Munge Leung to design the original space five years ago, said he wanted to pare back the seriousness of the original concept. The firm commissioned custom finishes, furniture, and lighting by companies like Applied Art Studio, Device222, and Castor for the project. A series of sheer panels featuring images of birds by photographer Stephen Green-Armytage hang in the center of the space and serve to divide the dining room.

The restaurant, which also dropped the supper-club title, has introduced a new informal—and less expensive—menu from chef Chris Zielinksi. Shared plates start at eight dollars. Dishes include red-snapper chips, potato and edamame soup, and crunchy tuna-salmon rolls. Mondays are lobster night.

Ultra can accommodate a total of 400 people. The dining room seats 112 seats, the front courtyard seats 20 and can hold 50 for receptions, and the rooftop patio holds 200. Ultra is also available for private bookings.
