How ‘Glamour’ and Facebook Are Getting Women Involved in Politics

The brands kicked off an election-year event series to highlight issues that matter to women.

This election season, Glamour magazine and Facebook are planning a series of live events to reach young women, with stops in key battleground states and at both national political conventions. The partnership builds on Glamour’s 51 Million platform, named for the number of women under 45 eligible to vote in November.

Considered a live extension of the platform, the Women's Initiative series will consist of lunchtime panel discussions with Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive moderating a conversation about how various political issues impact women. Glamour and Facebook announced the initiative in the nation’s capital last month in the rooftop lounge at the W Washington, D.C., hotel.

“Glamour is dedicated to elevating women’s voices during this election season, and so partnering with Facebook, the largest social media platform in the world, seemed ideal to accomplish that goal,” said Katie Giblin, special events director at Glamour.

The launch had a curated, bipartisan guest list that included social media experts, think tank executives, mid-level managers, and even the editors of local college papers, a strategic move by the magazine to reach its target demographic. The event drew 170 people throughout the two hours, 90 percent of whom were women, and included remarks from Leive and Facebook's government and politics outreach manager Crystal Patterson, who appeared on the magazine’s cover in September as one of a dozen trailblazing women of this election season.

The initiative plans to host events in New York, California, Florida, and Ohio, as well as at the national political party conventions this summer. The initiative will culminate with the Women's Media Town Hall in the fall that will also be streamed live on Facebook.

Facebook will promote the 51 Million campaign and Women's Initiative, including the latter's #EveryWomanCan hashtag, with a dedicated page on its website and via Facebook Live, the app’s live streaming function. The live stream will provide access to the discussions happening at the event for all of the publication's followers.
