June 11, 2014: E3 Considers Leaving L.A., Major Sponsors Abandon Football Bowl Games, Theater Chain Bans Google Glass

1. E3 CONSIDERS LEAVING L.A.: Citing the condition of the Los Angeles Convention Center, the president of the Entertainment Software Association said the E3 trade show may leave its longtime home for another city in 2016. Possible sites include Anaheim, California; San Francisco; New York; and New Orleans. CNBC: “Among the group's concerns are the spread out floor plan of the LA convention center, which requires show attendees to walk long distances between appointments, and housing issues. Finding a room during E3 is always a challenge, and while construction is underway on one new large-scale hotel, the ESA would like to see more. 2. MAJOR SPONSORS ABANDON FOOTBALL BOWL GAMES: Tostitos, Discover, and Vizio have dropped their title sponsorships of major college bowl games—the Fiesta, Orange, and Rose bowls, respectively. Sports Business Journal: “Industry sources are not sure why Tostitos opted out, although the price increase on the title sponsorship could have played a role. Title sponsorship deals in the old BCS annually ran in the $15 million to $20 million range. Sources say that CFP title sponsorships are closer to $25 million a year, and ESPN is seeking six-year commitments.” http://bit.ly/1pVQD31

3. THEATER CHAIN BANS GOOGLE GLASS: Alamo Drafthouse, a nationwide chain of movie theaters, has banned the use of Google Glass in its cinemas. Time: “The reason for the policy wasn’t just a matter of keeping theaters dark and quiet. Though cell phones can distract over moviegoers from what’s going on on the screen, Glass can put a little too much focus there. The main concern at hand is that Glass enables recording, which means that any user could tape and pirate a movie.” http://ti.me/UtaqKx

ATLANTIC CITY:  Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has opened the Borgata Baking Company, serving classic and contemporary desserts, fresh-pressed juices, and Illy Coffee. It also offers sugar-free and gluten-free options.

BOSTON:  Bar Boulud will open in the fall at Mandarin Oriental, Boston. The French-inspired bistro and wine bar, created in partnership with chef Daniel Boulud, will offer seasonal fare and charcuterie.

CHICAGO:  The InterContinental Chicago will host the “Together for Children” charity event on Thursday. The evening will feature a dinner created by executive chef Randy Reed, and it raises money for the Lifeline Humanitarian Organization of Chicago.

Mercadito Taqueria is now open in the Loop. Serving tacos, salads, and side dishes, the café offers quick meals for downtown office workers.

LAS VEGAS:  Chef Kerry Simon and managing partner Cory Harwell have finalized the menu for the new Carson Kitchen, ahead of the downtown restaurant’s scheduled opening in early June.

LOS ANGELES:  On August 7, Audi will present the fifth annual An Evening on the Beach at the Jonathan Beach Club Santa Monica in support of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Times announced Tuesday the schedule for its Labor Day weekend food festival known as the Taste. Best Events will produce.

SAN DIEGO:  The San Diego City Council appointed Marilyn Hannes to the San Diego Convention Center Corporation’s board of directors. Hannes, vice president of marketing for SeaWorld and Aquatica, will join the seven-member board that sets policy for the corporation.

WASHINGTON, D.C.:  Legal Sea Foods has opened at Reagan National Airport. GrizForm Design Architects designed the 5,560-square-foot bilevel restaurant, which includes outdoor seating, a 46-seat bar, and a 20-seat private dining room.
