5 Job-Finding Tips

Event industry newbies and planners looking for their next positions got a few job-hunting tips from industry pros at BiZBash and Mediabistro.com's job forecast panel discussion at Show last week. Their advice:

1. "Do deep research on the companies you want to work for, and go to their events, trade shows and panels to meet the planners [because they're the ones that might hire you]," says Laurel Touby, founder of Mediabistro.com.

2. "Embrace technology and let it work for you," says Robert Mellwig, Starwood Hotels' manager of staffing. Place your resume on online job boards and utilize their targeted search functions to know when the jobs you want are available.

3. "I want [to hire] someone who.phpires to have my job," says Jaclyn Bernstein, president and partner of Empire Force Events, because it shows that the person wants to grow with the company.

4. "Smile and use eye contact on an interview because you'll have to do it everyday on the job," says Margaret Poswistilo, Tishman Hotels' area director of human resources.

5. "Send a thank you letter to every person you interview with. If you interview with five people at the same company, send each a letter," says Stephanie Paul, who works in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's human resources development.
