To recognize its efforts to curb environmental consumption, the Florida Hotel and Conference Center in Orlando will receive Green Lodging certification from the state, an honor that only 50 hotels in Florida have received.

"According to a recent survey, 67 percent of meeting planners take environmental issues into consideration when selecting a meeting destination, so we are in the green game for years to come," said Simone Kuska, corporate director of sales and marketing for Edinburgh Management, the hotel's management company.

In order to gain certification, a hotel must carry out an environmental assessment, keep up conservation programs, and pass state inspections. To become more eco-friendly, the hotel implemented a towel reuse program and propertywide recycling, switched to fluorescent light bulbs, and installed shampoo and body wash dispensers. The property currently features 510 guest rooms and about 50,000 square feet of meeting space.
