1. NO MORE ROOM SERVICE: The New York Hilton Midtown plans to discontinue room service in August, instead opting for a cafeteria-style restaurant called Herb n' Kitchen. Crain's New York Business: "I don't think anyone makes a profit on room service because of its labor costs," said John Fox, senior vice president of PKF Consulting. "I'm sure all the big hotels will be looking at what Hilton is doing." http://bit.ly/ZySgIg
2. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM FRONTMAN PLANS "ALTERNATIVE IBIZA PARTY": LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy is designing a sound system for Manchester International Festival. The rig will be used at a club night called Despacio, which Murphy will helm and where he'll play only vinyl records. The Guardian: "It's about dissent, he suggests, not nostalgia, and questioning the bad habits that DJ software encourages." http://bit.ly/157GiEs
3. BOOKEXPO SHOWS STRENGTH OF TRADITIONAL TRADE SHOW: Last week's BookExpo America drew 20,000 publishers, authors, agents, bookstore owners, and librarians to New York's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for a decidedly traditional trade show—a victory after several years of uncertainty in the industry. The show also continued its public component and expected 2,000 "Power Readers" to attend, an increase from last year's 500 in the program's first year. New York Times: "It has evolved into something equally old-fashioned: a huge gathering for the book industry to talk up titles, showcase high-profile authors, and try to build elusive buzz for promising books." http://nyti.ms/18EX6El
