1. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE TO OFFICIALLY HEADLINE SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW: Justin Timberlake is officially returning to the Super Bowl. The N.F.L. confirmed Sunday that the performer, who last performed at the infamous 2004 halftime show with Janet Jackson, will headline the show in 2018. Washington Post: "The Memphis-born Timberlake will be featured in February at Super Bowl LII, held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The league has yet to announce if any other artists will join him onstage. This will be the third Super Bowl halftime gig for Timberlake, the most for any individual entertainer, including a 2001 performance with ‘N Sync. That appearance, however, was quickly eclipsed by the notorious episode three years later, in which he tore off co-star Janet Jackson’s top, briefly revealing a bejeweled nipple. The moment of partial nudity caused a national furor, prompting the FCC to levy a hefty fine against CBS (later dismissed by a federal appeals court), that network to apologize and the NFL to blame MTV, which produced the halftime show. In the wake of that production, which also featured Kid Rock (clad in an American flag poncho), P. Diddy and Nelly, the league began trotting out a string of tamer, rock-oriented acts, such as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and the Who. ... Timberlake followed that up with an interview with Mike Tirico at halftime of NBC’s 'Sunday Night Football,' with that network set to televise this season’s Super Bowl. The conversation did not take long to get to the 'wardrobe thing,' and Timberlake said, 'That won’t happen this time. … No, Mike, that’s not going to happen.' He added that he had 'watched a ton' of previous halftime performances to make sure his didn’t repeat anyone’s staging. Timberlake joked that, at 36, he definitely wouldn’t be jumping off the stadium roof, as Gaga pretended to last February." http://wapo.st/2h0tJrM
2. OSCARS MUSEUM RECEIVES FUNDING FROM MAJOR DONORS INCLUDING NETFLIX: The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, a delayed project that was originally supposed to open in Los Angeles this year, has received funding from Netflix, Bloomberg Philanthropies, producer Charles Roven, and Tom Spiegel. The venue now has reached nearly 80 percent of its $388 million goal. Variety: "The museum project has been beset by cost overruns and remains more than $78 million shy of its revised budget. The Academy Museum was originally slated to open this year; it’s now set to open its doors sometime in 2019. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn’t disclose the amounts of the new donations, but the total was less than $23 million. Last month, Haim and Cheryl Saban gave $50 million to the Academy Museum, the biggest contribution to date. With the gift, the Academy renamed the May Company building, which will house the main part of the museum, the Saban Building. The museum, at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, is designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano. It will feature six floors of exhibition spaces, a movie theater, education and special event spaces, conservation areas, a café and a gift shop. A spherical addition, which detractors have likened to the Death Star, will include a 1,000-seat theater and a rooftop terrace connected to the Saban Building with glass bridges. ... The Academy kicked off the museum campaign in 2012. The initiative is headed by Disney CEO Bob Iger and is co-chaired by Annette Bening and Tom Hanks." http://bit.ly/2xUhJmj
3. FIVE FORMER PRESIDENTS ATTEND HURRICANE RELIEF BENEFIT: The five living former presidents attended a hurricane relief benefit concert on Saturday, which took place at Texas A&M University in College Station. Politico: "Former presidents Clinton, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Barack Obama all attended. 'All of us on this stage here tonight could not be prouder of the response of Americans,' Obama said. 'When they see their neighbors, and their friends, when they see strangers in need, Americans step up. And as heartbreaking as the tragedies that took place here in Texas and in Florida, in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have been, but what we've also seen is the spirit of America at its best.' In the six weeks since the campaign began, more than $31 million has been raised from some 80,000 contributors, according to David Jones, chief executive of the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation. ... Carter praised volunteers across the county and also advocated for Habitat for Humanity. 'Let's all work together to make America still a greater volunteer nation,' the former president said. On Saturday morning, Clinton said he was proud to be involved in the event. 'As Americans, we lift each other up. I’m proud to be a part of this night. Hope you’ll tune in,' the 42nd president tweeted, linking to the One American Appeal livestream of the event." http://politi.co/2xWI4va
