Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' post-MTV Video Music Awards party—and its guests—had a lot to live up to. Billed as "the greatest party of all time" (it wasn't), the party took over Cipriani 42nd Street and admitted only those possessing a gold invite ticket and an outfit that passed muster with the event's strict party policy. The party's elaborate invitation included a page of instructions advising guests to be well-groomed (clean shaves and haircuts for the men; manicures and waxing for the women), well-dressed (Dolce & Gabbana and Versace were acceptable) and solo (each ticket admitted one and only one).Once guests passed through security—and an outfit check—a wide-open dance floor and a constant flow of Moet & Chandon champagne welcomed them. Co-hosted by music producer Guy Oseary and sponsored by Reebok, the event was produced by Bad Boy Entertainment (Combs' record label), who gave it a sexy look and feel. Nearly naked women—wearing only thongs and body glitter—swayed in gold cages suspended over the dance floor while members of aerial group Antigravity performed to a nonstop mix of hip-hop, R&B and dance music. (The rap mogul had used the group earlier that night during his performance at the VMAs at Radio City Music Hall.) Two large projection screens in the rear of the venue aired the VMA broadcast, then showed the movie Scarface.
The party drew a long list of A-list guests—including Sheryl Crow, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ed Norton and Mike Myers—and an elevated V.I.P. area with lots of couches and pillows was heavily guarded by a line of beefy security guards from Styles Security. But many of the entertainment industry celebs who graced the party mingled on the dance floor.
Antony Todd designed the party's decor around a red and white theme. Tables and chairs covered in white cloths lined the outside perimeter of the dance floor and tables were topped with square glass vases filled with water, floating white candles and white rose petals. Five bars were topped with tiered Lucite boxes filled with white candles and red rose petals. Even the couches were covered in plush white cushions—and branded with Combs' Sean John clothing line logo. Reebok also showed off its wares and strategically placed RBK shoes—its line of street-inspired apparel—at eye-level on the partition that separated the dance floor from the bars. (Reebok also welcomed Combs to its product launch in January.)
A limited number of guests were able to snag a Reebok shopping bag filled with two Sony PlayStation2 games, a Maverick Records sampler, Calvin Klein perfume and a Joe Boxer sleeping mask. Meanwhile, each celeb guest walked away with a Coach bag filled with a long list of goodies, including a gift certificate for two Infinity Entra shelf speakers, a DKNY leather jacket and a Dunhill cashmere scarf.
