1. New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting
The Scoop: With 250 events—classes, committee meetings, dinners, and award ceremonies—in a five-day period, more than 5,000 lawyers, judges, and academics have plenty to keep them busy. In 2004, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and political consultant James Carville spoke to attendees. There was also a networking reception titled “Celebrating Diversity in the Bar,” and a career development conference.
Behind the Scenes: Kathleen Heider, director of meetings at NYSBA, plans the event, which is always held at the Marriott Marquis—with some events off-site at places like the Harvard Club and Tavern on the Green. Jan. 24-29
2. UJA-Federation New York's Judge Joseph M. Proskauer Awards
The Scoop: The Lawyer’s Division of the UJA-Federation has hosted this event to honor lawyers in the Jewish community. With more than 700 people paying $750 apiece in 2004, the event raised more than $1 million—twice as much as 2003. Attendees again donated their dinners to the needy. News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch presented the night’s highest honor to Arthur Siskind, his company’s group general counsel.
Behind the Scenes: Stacy Schierman, event manager, planned the evening, which has been at the Grand Hyatt in recent years. Foremost Caterers provided the event food and the donated meals. Dec.
