Toronto's Top Marketing Events 2008

1. Canadian Marketing Association Awards
Considered one of the most prestigious marketing award events in Canada, the C.M.A. has been honouring the best marketing talent in the country for more than 35 years. Bianca Barbucci and Stephen Brown were presented with honourary life memberships at the 2007 gala, held at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel. The gala drew an audience of more than 2,100 industry insiders. The Westin will host the 2008 ceremony on November 28.2. Bessie Awards
More than 900 marketing professionals attended the 2007 event, a gala luncheon hosted by the Television Bureau of Canada and the Broadcast Executives Society at the Sheraton Hotel. This year, the annual competition—established in 1963 to recognize the best TV commercials created for a Canadian audience—moved to the Fairmont Royal York for an evening award ceremony on May 15.

3. Marketing Awards Gala

Marketing magazine celebrated the 86th anniversary of its annual awards on May 1. An audience of more than 1,000 attended the 2008 gala, which honoured the best in television, radio, and print advertising. The juried competition took place at the Carlu.

4. Canadian Public Relations Society (Toronto) ACE Awards
Recognizing creativity in public relations is the aim of the Achieving Communications Excellence (ACE) awards, presented annually to corporate, agency, nonprofit, and government organizations. The 2008 gala took place April 23 at Arcadian Court. Husein Madhavji returned as M.C. to host the Casino Royale-themed award show. The 2008 ceremony, which saw PraxisPR win Best PR Campaign of the Year, drew a soldout audience of 400.

5. National Advertising Benevolent Society Gala

This annual gala raises funds to provide assistance to marketing and media professionals suffering from illness or injury. Hundreds of attendees turned out to the Kool Haus for the 24th annual gala on May 13. The 2007 gala raised nearly $800,000 through the NABS ad auction.

6. Cassie Awards

With some $500 billion being invested annually in advertising worldwide, the Cassies aim to reward advertising campaigns that deliver results. The awards are presented by the Institute of Communication Agencies, founded in 1905 to represent Canada’s communication and advertising agencies. The 2007 ceremony was held in November at the Liberty Grand with nearly 500 attendees. A venue for the next event, to be held January 27, 2009, has not yet been confirmed.

7. Strategy Agency of the Year Awards
Strategy magazine has been honouring the finest Canadian ad agencies for the past 18 years. The 2007 event, held at the Docks (now known as Polson Pier), also featured the magazine’s second annual Big awards, which recognize agencies that go above and beyond to meet their big clients’ needs. The gala drew more than 300 attendees. Details for the 2008 gala have not been confirmed.

8. R.M.B. Crystal Awards
The Radio Marketing Bureau’s annual awards recognize creativity in radio advertising and public service announcements. The 2008 awards were held March 6 at the Fairmont Royal York. The gala, produced under the umbrella of Canadian Music Week, drew a crowd of more than 500 radio and agency insiders.

9. Marketing Hall of Legends Dinner
The fourth annual ceremony, presented by Mandrake (an executive search firm with a specialty in marketing) and the Toronto chapter of the American Marketing Association, honours Canadians who have dedicated their careers to the pursuit of excellence in marketing. Previously held at the Granite Club, this year’s sold-out event on January 30 moved to the Four Seasons Hotel.

10. Canadian Media Directors' Council Annual Conference

This event, organized by the nonprofit industry association of media agency presidents and managing directors, explores important issues facing the industry. The 2008 conference, entitled “What a Wonderful World: The Digital Reality,” focused on the opportunities being created by digital media. The Metro Toronto Convention Centre hosted the April 8 conference.
