For casual meetings, here are three South End spots with creative fare that won't swallow the expense account.

1. A venture between Christopher Myers of Radius, Great Bay, and Via Matta and Joanne Chang of Flour Bakery & Cafe, Myers+Chang debuted in September 2007, offering a whimsical take on Chinese cuisine. Rock ’n’ roll is the soundtrack here, and the casual, open space has a mod, ’50s diner look. The affordable menu—almost everything is under $20—features dishes such as braised pork-belly buns, scallion pancakes, and a variety of noodles.

2. A few blocks down Washington Street, Italian restaurant Stella debuted a breakfast-and-lunch offshoot, Stella Express, in June 2008. The café offers six bar stools lining the front window and an outdoor seating area for 30. The lunch menu includes paninis, pizza, and salads.

3. Around the corner, another neighborhood favorite has added a more casual option. In an attempt to capture an afternoon crowd, Gaslight Brasserie du Coin added an eco-friendly takeout spot called Green Light in August 2007. Situated behind the brasserie, the lunch spot seats 64 and offers organic sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and more.
