Madame Tussauds Opens Today

The latest incarnation of Madame Tussauds—this time housed in the old Woodward & Lothrop department store—opened to the public today. Last night the $16 million museum hosted a grand-opening gala for 600 people, including Mayor Adrian Fenty, former mayor Marion Barry, and dozens of local and national media outlets.

The 14,000-square-foot venue is part of a 27,000-square-foot space (allowing room for expansion). Currently, Tussauds can book receptions for 300 or sit-down dinners for 50. The space weaves from exhibit to exhibit, featuring historical presidents like Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, sports icons such as Tiger Woods, and modern day politicos like Bill and HIllary on display. The "Glamour" room is home to modern-day celebrities including Beyoncé, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie; it's the largest space in the museum. Restaurant Associates is the venue's exclusive caterer, and they have already begun booking corporate events.
