When you’re known for creating some of the most opulent, theatrical environments in the event business, what do you do when it comes to your own nuptials? Pull out all the stops by hosting a Valentine’s Day extravaganza at midnight inside the Empire State Building, of course.
On Thursday, Preston Bailey wed his partner of seven years, Theo Blackmann, in an over-the-top ceremony officiated by the veteran event designer’s longtime friend Joan Rivers. Relying on his event industry friends, Bailey collaborated with Something Different Party Rental and Levy Lighting to turn the raw space on the 21st floor of the Empire State Building into a dazzling, wedding-appropriate environment. As soon as the 200 guests arrived, they knew they were in for a quirky evening when they entered the coat check area, which was presided over by a giant floral, King Kong-shaped statue—a nod to the evening’s iconic venue.
Other unexpected elements included a 12-foot-tall sculpture of a wedding gown, a gold tree strung with boxes of gourmet chocolate, a cocktail-style after-party complete with breakfast-for-dessert finger foods catered by Great Performances, and a bright pink dance floor.
