2. ArtJamz Dupont Studio

The minds behind ArtJamz, the pop-up, painting-focused event series, opened ArtJamz Dupont Studio in March just off Dupont Circle. The 700-square-foot studio has two separate spaces that can accommodate 30 people throughout. The space comes complete with a multipurpose license for entertainment and event catering and can be booked for the company’s signature painting sessions or other events.

3. Melody Tavern
3. Melody Tavern

Melody Tavern, a combination restaurant and entertainment spot, opened in Arlington in November. The 6,700-square-foot venue specializes in American food and live jazz and blues nightly. The main dining room can seat 135, plus an additional 28 at the wraparound bar. Receptions for groups as large as 216 can be accommodated indoors, with an additional 80 on the patio. There is an 80-square-foot stage that can host karaoke starting later this month.

4. 918 F Street

Daily deals Web site LivingSocial opened its first event venue, 918 F Street, in February. The 28,000-square-foot building has been refurbished with new, modern walls and an open design for its latest usage. The company will host a variety of different activities, like dance and yoga classes, cooking demonstrations, chef-hosted dinners, and mixology lessons for 25 to as many as 140 people in its seven-level space managed by international hospitality consulting firm Vucurevich Simons Advisory Group. For culinary enthusiasts, the demonstration kitchen can accommodate 36 people and is equipped with live, automated video feeds of the hosting chef. Group tickets are available, though quantities vary per event. 918 F Street is currently not available for private event rental.

5. Smithsonian American Art Museum

The Smithsonian American Art Museum will debut its "Art of Video Games" exhibit on March 16 showcasing the entertainment medium’s 40-year history. The interactive displays include 80 games on various consoles that visitors can play. The museum has five event spaces, including the 28,000-square-foot Kogod Courtyard, that can host seated events for 40 to 850 or receptions of as many as 1,200 people.

6. The Hamilton

Over in Penn Quarter, Clyde's Restaurant Group opened The Hamilton, a 37,000-square-foot dining and entertainment venue, in January. The bilevel space has five dining areas on street level for as many as 400 people as well as a 17,000-square-foot performance space in the basement known as Live, which hosts music and entertainment performances three nights a week. During the day or on non-concert nights, groups as large as 400—or 250 for seated events—can book the venue complete with a 30-foot stage and sound equipment for karaoke sing-offs or other team activities.

7. Elisir

Another addition to the Penn Quarter area, Elisir Italian restaurant opened in December and recently began offering private cooking classes for groups with head chef Enzo Fargione. The in-kitchen classes last about four hours and are available on Saturdays only for groups of up to 18. For dining, the main restaurant space can seat 70 plus an additional 20 at the bar. There is also a private room for 25.

8. Peacemaker National Training Center

For a weekend excursion, the Peacemaker National Training Center shooting range in Glengary, West Virginia, is located just two hours outside the city and will open this month for its regular season. Opened in September 2011, the grounds have two public ranges with multiple shooting options at each, including 15- and 25-yard pistol areas, skeet, trap, and 5-stand rifle arrangements. These ranges can accommodate groups from five to 100. A new sporting clays course opened this year as well.

9. William Jeffrey's Tavern

William Jeffrey's Tavern opened in Arlington in December, adorned with 1920s-style decor and murals throughout. The 6,500-square-foot space has seating for 200 throughout its two dining spaces. The venue is equipped with 15 high-definition TVs that groups can use for interactive entertainment or games.

10. Massage Envy-Manassas

Massage Envy-Manassas opened in December with 13 treatment rooms. In addition to the spa’s namesake massages, the new facility also provides facials, aromatherapy, and heated muscle therapy. The facility can accommodate groups of up to 25 at a time with one person in each of its treatment rooms.

The Eat Good Food Group, behind Restaurant Eve and Virtue Feed and Grain, opened Society Fair, a combination market and wine bar in Alexandria, in January. The venue houses a demonstration kitchen that can be used for groups of 10, and the bar can host cocktail classes, sommelier-led tastings, and other food-centric events up to 12 at a time. The wine bar can seat 80 or host 200 for receptions.

Opened in late May, Quench Bar in Rockville features cocktails such as “Sex in the Suburbs,” its twist on the cosmo, and the “Kentucky Irby,” a sweet, minty drink with gin and fresh rosemary. Private events can be held in the space, which can accommodate as many as 75 guests.

Masa14 opened its rooftop in April. The bar serves pairings of Latin-Asian finger foods such as Bulgogi Steak & Cheese Bun with Latin-style sangria and cocktails. The rooftop can accommodate 131 seated guests and 176 guests for reception.

Inside Lost Society is a 2,900-square-foot lounge adorned with crystal chandeliers and purple couches. A roof deck is also available offering a unique vantage point of the Capitol. On weekends, DJs spin dance, lounge, and house music creating a relaxed atmosphere. Private events can be held in the lounge or the roof deck, which is accessible throughout the year and is enclosed on cooler days.

A few steps away from the Columbia Heights Metro, Acre121 brings Southern flavor and a mix of live traditional bluegrass and folk rock together. The 3,800-square-foot space serves barbecue, craft beers, and cocktails. It can accommodate 225 guests in its two bars and outdoor patio.

Using refurbished shipping containers, Fairgrounds is an outdoor multiuse pop-up space featuring bars, live music, food trucks, and farmers markets. Private events can be held in the space for 50 to 4,000 people.

A new addition to Dirty Bar, the Deck opened in April where DJs get the crowd started with hip hop, top 40, and house music. The 1,600-square-foot rooftop patio holds 125 guests and is available for private events.

The Curious Grape in Arlington opened in March with a decor using green and purple tones. The space seats 55 guests with 10 bar seats and five cheese bar seats. A private dining room is also available accommodating 40 for a seated dinner and 55 for reception.

A warm and rustic space, Boundary Road features family wine-makers practicing organic or biodynamic production. The 2,000-square-foot space, which opened in February, frequently changes its food and wine selection. It can seat 72 guests and 99 guests for reception.

Located in Petworth, Chez Billy features a second-floor lounge that carries an old-world cocktail and beer list. The 5,000-square-foot space can accommodate 260 guests.

For corporate meetings near the U.S. Capitol Building, Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital can host events for 10 to 250 guests in light-filled meeting rooms equipped with WiFi and built-in DPL projectors and screens. A $10 million renovation completed in 2011 restored this historic Civil War-era building to its 19th century appearance.

Alexandria’s Virtue Feed & Grain, a rustic new restaurant from the creators of Restaurant Eve, offers a private event space overlooking the river for up to 60 standing guests. The game room decor includes a pool table that converts to a dining table and video games from Xbox to Pac-Man.

District Kitchen, a new 60-seat Woodley Park restaurant that opened in early January, combines seasonal Mid-Atlantic cuisine with a laid-back, casual atmosphere. Currently not open for lunch or brunch, the restaurant is open to full buyouts for lunches on weekdays for a minimum of $2,000 and for dinner Sunday through Thursday for a minimum of $3,500 to $5,000.

Opened in fall 2011, District Architecture Center in Gallery Place Chinatown has five modern meeting rooms, including the 20-seat Florance board room and the Clark and Studios rooms, which each seat 50 for a reception, 20 for classroom seating, or 40 for theater-style seating. The meeting spaces can be rented out for a few hours or for multi-day events and come fully equipped with audio-visual equipment.

Evening Star Cafe in Alexandria recently renovated its private event space, No. 9 Lounge, to create a new, Victorian look, with antique furniture, retro styling, and dim, romantic lighting. The lounge can host private parties nightly for up to 50 guests, and plans are in the works to open for brunch parties in March.

Irish Whiskey Public House, a new Irish pub in Dupont Circle that opened in January, can accommodate 50 people in the Dublin room, its top-floor private event space. The Dublin room has a private bar, dining tables and lounge-style seating, and a dedicated bathroom.

After recently renovating all of its meeting space in 2011, Park Hyatt Washington offers small corporate groups its Mezzanine Loft, which seats 36 around a long wooden table. The space could be used in conjunction with the casual Gallery Lounge gathering area, where guests can eat, have a drink, or check email.

Jake’s American Grille, a neighborhood restaurant in Chevy Chase, just opened private event space Jake's Boiler Room in January. This downstairs game room seats 60 and includes a full-service bar, billiards, darts, arcade games, and flat-screen TVs.

The private event space at popular Adams Morgan bar Napoleon recently underwent a facelift, upgrading the space with new couches and tables and keeping the signature metallic wallpaper. The space accommodates 45 seated and 100 standing.

Boxcar Tavern, a new 65-seat bar and restaurant in Capitol Hill from the owners of Molly Malone’s and Lola’s, opened in late December. The name is derived from the restaurant's long and narrow dining room, which serves pub fare, cocktails, and drafts in a traditional wood-paneled and gas lantern-lit setting.
