The nation’s largest auto show had its 109th run in 2017. This year’s event—which expanded its footprint by 55,000 feet—had new features including an e-pass. The pass let attendees receive auto information on their mobile devices, and streamlined the show experience for guests. #2 Trade Show & Convention
The annual gathering for restaurant, lodging, and food-service pros covered 680,000 square feet of space at McCormick Place. The event drew some 67,000 attendees and 2,300 exhibitors this year. Highlights included a hands-on cheese-making demo and a peek at culinary trends including black-bean spaghetti and volcanic water. Next: May 19-22, 2018

#3 Trade Show & Convention
The sold-out 2017 show had 2,204 exhibitors, which marks an increase over the 2,100 exhibitors in 2016. This year’s show had an increased focus on smart and connected products, and featured the first Smart Home Pavilion. The event also had increased exposure on blogs and other types of online media. #4 Trade Show & Convention (up from #5)
The 2017 show had 82,109 gate admissions, an increase over the 70,000 attendees in 2016. On the trade show floor, 410 booths showcased the latest offerings in hair care and color, nail care, and skin care. For the first time, the show was co-located with the International Esthetics, Cosmetics, and Spa Conference. Next: April 28-30, 2018

#5 Trade Show & Convention
Known as the largest pop-culture convention in the Midwest, the event appeals to fans of movies, comics, television, video games, and more. Held at McCormick Place, it features a floor with hundreds of exhibitors; there are also panels, autograph sessions, and screenings. Celebrity guests at this year’s event included Millie Bobby Brown from the Netflix hit Stranger Things. The 2017 event drew some 80,000 visitors, up from 72,000 in 2016. Next: April 6-8, 2018

#6 Trade Show & Convention
This year’s event drew 760 exhibiting companies and a crowd of 17,000 candy and snack professionals. There were also 17 data-driven learning sessions, which focused on trends in retail technology and shopper engagement. On the show floor, guests perused four acres of cookies, candies, savory snacks, and chocolates. Next: May 22-24, 2018

The theme of last year’s gathering, “Beyond Imaging,” encouraged attendees to explore new ways to find success in the field. The event featured 659 exhibitors, 435 educational courses, and 1,728 scientific paper presentations. Total advance registration was 48,888. Next: November 26-December 1, 2017

New C.E.O. Amanda Signorelli oversaw the festival and added more talks and panels. Founded in Chicago in 2011, the event has since grown to include conferences in eight North American cities including Detroit, Miami, and Toronto. Next: Summer 2018

#9 Trade Show & Convention
Sponsored by Progressive, the event drew around 46,300 guests this year. The show took place at McCormick Place in January, and showcased boats, R.V.s, campers, and outdoor gear. Other highlights included free sailing lessons and hands-on practice in a boat simulator. Next: January 10-14, 2018
