4. Prevent Cancer Foundation's Annual Spring Gala

#4 Benefit
The 24th Prevent Cancer Annual Spring Gala raised $1.7 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the most the gala has ever raised in its 24-year history. Held in May at the National Building Museum, the gala's decor from event designer and Prevent Cancer Foundation board member David Tutera was inspired by the Republic of Singapore. Singapore’s ambassador, Ashok Mirpuri, and Mrs. Gouri Mirpuri served as honorary patrons for the gala, which had a “Sensations of Singapore” theme. More than 30 members of Congress were among the 1,000 guests that attended the event. Organizers attribute the stellar fund-raising results in part to a change in the night-of donation appeal: A combination of commitments secured ahead of time and matching gifts helped jumpstart the fund-raising. Last year's donation appeal raised just over $10,000, and this year, it raised nearly $100,000. Next: May 9, 2019

All proceeds fund pediatric cancer research at Children’s National Health System and through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The event, in its 13th year, included a 700-person daytime poker tournament, a presentation from top restaurants, a sprawling silent auction, and an after-party hosted by NBC4’s Doug Kammerer and Angie Goff featuring musical performances by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper and DJ Skribble. Notable attendees included football legend Joe Montana, former New York Mets star Dwight “Doc” Gooden, and former Washington Redskins players Chris Samuels and Santana Moss. Next: March 9, 2019
