On the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day, a concert audience of hundreds of thousands watched a star-studded concert from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building. Actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise hosted the concert, which included General Colin L. Powell, actress Allison Janney, singer Cynthia Erivo, actor John Corbett, and the National Symphony Orchestra with conductor Jack Everly. The 29th annual broadcast of the concert was also live-streamed on PBS, YouTube, and Facebook. Capital Concerts produced the program. Next: May 27, 2019

2. National Christmas Tree Lighting

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump's first National Christmas Tree Lighting took place on November 30 and aired on the Hallmark Channel on December 4. Kathie Lee Gifford and Dean Cain hosted the holiday festivities, which included performances by the Beach Boys, Wynonna, the Texas Tenors, Mannheim Steamroller, and the U.S. Navy Band led by music director Steve Gibson. Next: November 28, 2018

After 2017's stripped-down White House Easter Egg Roll, attendance went up to 30,000 for first lady Melania Trump's second edition of the popular event (last year's gathering drew in 21,000 guests). The 140th event featured the traditional egg roll, egg and cookie decorating stations, a station for making cards for U.S. troops, and a new addition: lawn bowling. Next: April 22, 2019
