With the Academy Awards taking over Los Angeles next week, we decided to see exactly how much money is going into all the events and entertaining that go on around the awards. Here's what we found: The 100 biggest events in the days surrounding the awards generate at least $150 million in revenue for the city's event and hospitality industries, according to event producers and vendors who have worked on these and other similar events.
The big five events on Oscar night—the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' official Governors Ball, Vanity Fair's exclusive party, the Elton John AIDS Foundation benefit, AIDS Project L.A.'s fund-raisers, and the Night of 100 Stars viewing dinner—cost a total of $10 million. These estimates take into account the fee for the venue and a considerable food and beverage tab—the Governors Ball catering bill could be more than $1 million this year—as well as scores of such additional vendors as security personnel, PR flacks, linen providers, valet parking services, and custom tent makers, plus additional fees for the setup and planning of the events.
