Oscars, Globes Will Go Without Union Writers

Although the SAG awards got one last week, the Oscars and the Golden Globes will not be receiving waivers that allow striking union writers to work on their scripts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

According to the industry trade's report, the WGA made the statement last night, with only the producers of the Globes so far being notified of the news officially. "The WGA said Monday night that it has nixed a writing-waiver request from producers of the Golden Globes telecast and also a request for some clips clearances for the Oscars. But a WGA insider said a decision also has been made—though not announced—to reject a request for a writing waiver for the Oscars as well," according to The Reporter.

Globes producers indicate they are still hopeful to continue negotiations that would allow writers to work on their program. But the problem for the award shows may go beyond just the lack of script writers: "Actors who are members of SAG and AFTRA will be loath to act as presenters on the programs if it means crossing WGA picket lines," notes The Reporter.

The Golden Globes are scheduled for January 13 at the Shrine, and the Oscars for February 24 at the Kodak Theatre.
