The updated format for Friday’s Daytime Emmy Awards we reported on last week didn’t save the show from maintaining the recent trend of award shows with suffering ratings. The Hollywood Reporter reported today that a paltry 5.4 million people tuned in to see the ABC telecast, safely beating the 2006 record low of 6.1 million.
Producers hoped to capitalize on the new Golden Globes-style seating arrangement with footage of famous guests and nominees from digital video cameras placed at each of the tables. Staffers went to the tables during the commercial breaks to retrieve the recordings and upload them to Disney-ABC Television Group-owned SoapNet’s Web site throughout the show. Clips included attendees like Regis Philbin and Barbara Walters telling jokes and offering thanks to their fans in quivering close-ups reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project.SoapNet enabled the clips to be embedded on other sites to continue buzz and draw attention after the awards. Though statistics of how this influenced Web traffic are not yet available, as of Monday afternoon, the only clip to gain any exposure on television or online was from the broadcast. Tyra Banks’s awkwardly impassioned acceptance speech for “Best Talk Show: Informative” found its way to all corners of the media, proving once again that publicity stunts pale in comparison to unscripted celebrity ego.
