Ralph Lauren's Polo label is adding a new event marketing endeavor. The New York-based fashion company has signed on to be the official outfitter for the Wimbledon tennis tournament through 2010, dressing all on-court officials, including chair umpires, line judges, and ball people. "The main goal is for us to be integral for an event. It can never be that we are just a sponsor," senior vice president of advertising, marketing, and corporate communications David Lauren told Women's Wear Daily. "We are very careful about what we do and we take our time and make sure it feels right." Declining to name the exact price, he said Polo is spending less than $10 million for the sponsorship. Polo also has a four-year sponsorship arrangement with the U.S. Open.
