Well-Attended L.A. Marathon Suffers Two Deaths

More than 25,000 hit the streets—making a mess of traffic all over the area—for the 21st annual Los Angeles Marathon this Sunday. An additional 20,000 participated in the wheelchair version of the race. The race begins and ends downtown, turning to avoid the separate city of Beverly Hills in its course.

Despite sunny, mild conditions and a big turnout of one million spectators, the event was marred by the deaths of two runners, both retired law enforcement officers who collapsed while running; it was the second time in the marathon?s history that a participant died.

The “Emerald Nuts Quality of Life Expo” preceded the race on March 17 and 18 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. More than 80,000 attendees browsed exhibitors’ booths, showcasing wares like running shoes and nutrition supplements.
